They played the Diddy remix of "Atomic" during one part of an MTV Movie
Special they did all about Pamela Anderson Lee and "Barb Wire," but it was
just an instrumental section, and only for a second. It's not in the movie.

Coinkeedink: A local TV station did a story related to the movie. You know,
one of those tie-in things... "Demi Moore takes it off in STRIPTEASE, but
what is a REAL stripper's life like? Find out at 5...". So I was watching
the story, and they showed this mother of two who worked at a strip bar etc
etc... and during the story they kept cutting to shots of her dancing in
the club with live sound and her music was "Rapture" (the original
version).
I've also noticed whenever they do a story about phone sex or prostitution,
they always use "Call Me". Whenever it's a beach scene, it's "The Tide Is
High".
Rosie O'Donnell's band was playing "Call Me" the other day as they cut to a
commercial.
"Rapture" is often played at Phoenix Suns games during half-time.
"The Tide Is High" was in LONGTIME COMPANION and MURIEL'S WEDDING.
Am I rambling? :)

I think that is when I taped it too, but do you remember how they cut it
down the second time? The first time it played, during the short
instrumental part of the song, she was dancing around and they did that
high saturated effect to the color and it was like a strobe light as she
moved. The next time it aired, when the guy who played David on Eight Is
Enough was the host, they cut out that whole part of the song! I haven't
seen the original since.
Other News: I received this message from a friend:
Johnny,
Hey dude. Dead Beat will be shown on Cinemax (do you get Cinemax, if not I
do) on Wed July 31 at 5:30 AM. Rock & Rule will air on TNT (I guess that
means with commercials, yuck) on July 4, 3:10AM. Debbie is listed both as
having featured songs, and as one of the voices in the movie.
P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

I remember on "A Current Affair" when I was in high school (ok, my MOM used
to watch it, NOT ME! I'd never watch such trash *laugh*) that anytime they
did a story on "Hot Men of the '90s" or "Hollywood Hunks" or something about
gigolos or something, they'd always play "I Want That Man."
Also, was VERY disappointed that Deborah's birthday didn't make it into USA
Today this morning. :( However, Johnny Rotten mentioned it on his "Rotten
Day" radio spot, and played the part of "English Boys" where she sings:
"When I was 17 I saw a magazine..."

Does anyone out there know how many copies of PARALLEL LINES

I've always wondered about this. Also, anyone know the same
information about AUTOAMERICAN?
In fact, I would also really like to know how DH's last
several solo albums have sold, domestically and
internationally, compared to the Blondie albums. Have the
DH albums gone gold and/or platinum?

Yeah, I'm too old to do that stuff now...I bet Asbury Park is even more fun
at 3 am, though, maybe we should try it again.
This is totally unrelated to anything above but but those of you who live
in the NY/NJ area have probably been treated to a commercial for the NJ Tax
authority or some official body, which features "One Way or Another" very
prominently, then follows it up by saying that if you are a deadbeat scum
who has not paid NJ taxes then the state will get you (One way or another,
of course)...this one stopped me in my tracks while I was getting ready for
work one morning. They have been running it early a.m. on the news radio
stations so you may hear it if you're as lucky as me...
Another completely odd (not to mention clueless) use for a Blondie song,
courtesy of the state of New Jersey!!!

I was HORRIFIED when I heard the Tax Man using "One Way Or

believe Debbie (a Jersey gal herself) would give permission
to the state to do this. Or is this one of those infamous
cases where the artist has no power, and the record company
makes all the money?

It's a bit more "live" or what I call "garage-y"; maybe a bit thinner than the retail Debravation, but you can really hear everything and everyone. From my engineering standpoint I do enjoy all the levels in the retail CD mixes, but I equally enjoy the quirky 8 1/2 Rhumba, as well as Joey Ramone on Standing In My Way on this CD. The live Black Dog is a hoot and a half as well. I strongly recommend ordering this disk to round out your collections. From owner-dhbis@ftp1.primenet.com Sat Jul 27 18:05:22 1996

YES!! But it's fun. i also luv it when a slip of Blondie pops up when
unexpected in movies, etc. My two favorites have already been mentioned... so
i'll just second them with another "vote." "In The Flesh" in NIGHTMARE ON ELM
STREET PART GOD IF I KNOW and my very favorite "The Tide Is High" in LONGTIME
COMPANION. The openly sequences are so much fun set to that tune. I have the
tape and still watch the beginning of the movie regularly.
Oh yeh, i remember Deb's "Call Me" version on SOLID GOLD! Wasn't she dancing
around a circular object and then she laid down on it... or was that Rapture?

I really don't think so, it could be the message is wrong. Then again, TV
Guide listings always make mistakes... My friend who sent it said she got

We had a BarBQ at Chris Stein's house and on the street in front of it too.
Hot Dogs, hamburgers, vegetables, sausages, corn and more. There were about
twenty of Debbie's friends there including Toni C., Jimmi Destri, Carla Olla,
Mistress Formica, Michael Shmidt, Barry Kramer and the assorted little brat
running around causing trouble. After the food, Debbie opened her gifts and
got some pretty cool stuff including a gold watch, a rubber plant, skull
earrings and a silver dragon cigarette holder that I got her just to piss you
guys off. All in all, it was successful and Debbie had a great time even if
she did only get in from Canada at 8:30 that morning. I'm sure BLK will be
giving his account of the party too very soon.

She is a model in (and is on the cover of) a nude photography technique
book by Santucci. It was published either 1968 or 1970 and has evidently
been reissued once, having been advertised a while ago in the "Shutterbug"
magazine.
The photos are not indecent and one in particular is compositionally
excellent. She looks very attractive,it appears that her hair has grey
streaks even back then and as Dolly Parton said of someone else, looks like
she "has everything a girl could want,if not a whole lot of it".
Didn't Debbie do an interview once for the inimitable (thank God) Al
Goldstein on his New York show?

They had an article about Debbie hanging in the lobby. I couldn't get a copy
but it was from Time Out. It talked about the movie, the entertainment
industry and "life after Blondie". There is a picture of her in the recording
studio. At the time of the article she was recording with the JPs in CT.

This is dedicated to Ed (who will be driving for the next several
months as
part of a Christian missions team) and Susan (who will now better
know how to
pray when he's gone).
You have been driving for too long when:
You know all the Top 40 songs on the radio by heart.
You have a tan only on the skin that's on the sunny side of the car.
You have sampled every brand of candy bar and chips.
You start eating beef jerky.
The bugs and tar on your car are so thick that you can no longer see
the
paint.
EVERYTHING starts looking the same.
You can predict the interior design of the chain motel where you will
spend
the night.
Everyone knows your CB handle.
The muscles that you don't use to drive atrophy.
The amount of road kill that has crossed your path reaches the double
digits.
You know your phone card number by heart.

Subject: [DHBIS] VH1's History of Music Video A to Z
semi-annual "History of Music Video A to Z," and this year it was even more
lame than usual. I didn't even bother to stay and watch through "H" to see
if any of Debbie's solo vids made it in--they NEVER do, but it seems like in
past years they've usually played more than one Blondie vid, like maybe
"Heart of Glass," "Rapture," and that really crappy mix-edit version of
"Tide Is High." Today, however, all they played was "Rapture." Bleh. It
seemed like they were deliberately playing only one video from each artist
selected, though. Can anybody confirm this? Like for Berlin they only

As far as Blondie goes (I didn't see the H's either), they only played
"Rapture." I hoped they would at least play "Heart of Glass."

Actually, they also played "No More Words" by Berlin, and even had a Pat
Benetar block of about 3 or 4 videos. Yeah, them music channels, they're
lacking a lot, especially MTV...

In case you haven't seen, May's "Q" magazine has a lift out book about punk
bands.....It has a 10 page section about Blondie and Deborah Harry. It
lists all the the chart postions for the albums and the singles, both in the
US and UK. According to "Q", "Parllel Lines" and "Autoamerican" went
platinum in the UK & USA. All of Debbie's solo albums have gone gold in the
UK and in the US. "Def Dumb & Blonde", went platinum here in Australia.

What do you think about this suggestion i'd like to put to Debbie and her
management about future recording. How about working with Mike Chapman
again?
The most success she has had with Blondie OR solo is when Mike Chapman has
produced the record. (Not just Blondie albums, remember the success of Def
Dumb and Blonde compared to Rockbird, Koo Koo or Debravation.) He seems to
be able to produce records that show Debbie at her very best and the most
accessible to most people.
It's just my opinion, and I don't want to sound as though I know exactly
what is best for Deb, but I would like her to get the success that she
deserves.

Mike Chapman is certainly a great producer, and seems to know Debbie's
voice by heart. I agree about "Def Dumb And Blonde", it has lots of really
great songs.
The freshest take recently, though, was "No Talking Just Head", which
displayed a quality in Debbie's voice I had never heard before. I certainly
hope the upcoming Heads project will recieve a major label push from
whoever ends up releasing it. I think "NTJH" would have been a huge hit
with a video and a single release, had anyone heard it that is. There's
even people on this list that haven't heard it yet...

I think most of us want to see Debbie have a huge hit, so if you want that,
buy her records when they come out (don't get a copy from a friend or
whatever, that doesn't count), and play them or request them publicly if
you have the chance.
Just my two cents.

you want if you want legs,OK? I mean, well, let's be blunt:he's worked with
piles of people and none of them have exactly been Hall of Fame bound!
Had he produced the Stones their last album would have been "Let It Bleed".
Blondie were doing fine under Gotteher and, sure,Chapman gave them three
solid albums."Autoamerican" so well presaged the decade it's not funny:the
band deserves critical recognition in a big way for that alone. But no
freakin' way would "The Hunter" have gone out under those circumstances,in
that shape, with a firm hand on the yoke, which is what you're paying for in
a producer.
Like an airline captain, producers are well overpaid when things go
right;when they go wrong, they make it up in a big hurry.
I'm sure Chapman's a nice guy,helps old ladies cross the street,etc.But
his musical vision is just not long-term.I feel sorry for any artist who
wants to run with the big dogs(if not,you might as well stay on the
porch,eh?)and signs on with him.

I have some Blondie Videos :
The best of Blondie (1981, edition 1993 by PMI) and Blondie Live (1983 by
CICvideo) I bought in the Virgin Megastore, Oxford Street, London. The first
one has been sold out for now, the second one can still be found in most
major record stores in London. Isn't there a Virgin in Los Angeles (should
be on the road from LAX to the Hollywood Hills)?
The complete picture (Chrysalis CVHS 5040) is available in our public
library (Wetteren, Belgium : I know you'll go anywhere, but I doubt you had
this in mind (-: ). I copied it for myself (I KNOW : it's illegal, but what
should one do, I can't find this one in any store).
A few years ago, the video version of Eat to the beat was on Super Channel
(which had pretty good music programs, when it wasn't NBC yet), so I copied
it too.
Finally, Debbie appeared on the "Senza Una Donna" concert in Brussels in the
autumn of '95. I taped the television show. (Debbie was very succesful
there. She sang "Strike me pink", "French Kissin'","Call me", "The tide is
high" and "Heart of glass", but not all of them are on the tape.)
If you're very desperate, I can always copy you these shows on a videotape
and send it to you. It will be PAL though, so you'll have to convert it. Can
you tell me what records you have ? Maybe we can swap if you've got
something interesting ?

Hey Lisa, and everyone,
I recieved some (unconfirmed) information last night from a gentleman at 32
Records, which is apparently an independent record label based out of New
York City. He says they have just finished recording an album by The Jazz
Passengers Featuring Deborah Harry With Elvis Costello (that is the way he
referred to the artist billing), that the record is titled "Individually
Twisted" and it will be released in October.
I will be updating the web page accordingly as I get confirmation and more
info. And of course, I will keep our list updated.
Yea!
>Maybe Louis Can answer this one.

Hmmm. I am not sure. I have a record of everyone on the list, but most of
the time I only know the email address, and sometimes you can't really tell
from that. A partial list is:
US
UK
Australia
Belgium
Canada
The Netherlands
France
Japan
There's a lot of email addresses that I can't tell the countries. I imagine
most of them are US colleges or US online services, since they end in .edu
or .com.
If you want to start including your country in your messages, go right
ahead (but don't post a one line message with the name of your country,
that would be a little off topic no?). Perhaps folks in the US can include
their city and state. I for one am in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, but I think
everyone knows that. :)

"Mired in impecunious punkdom, yet to shed covers-hatin, PCP-tokin,
soon-to-be Pete Best-emulatin' bassist Gary Valentine, the pre-July '77
Blondie were an ambitious yet cranky collective. "I saw Debbie turn into
a skeleton," Valentine tells Johnny Black."
Witness: Gary Valentine
Event: Blondie "go pop"
Date: 1977
Location: New York, Los Angeles and, er, Bristol
"I was living on the streets in Manhatten in the middle of 1975 when Clem
Burke asked me if I'd like to join Blondie. I knew Clem from Bayonne,
New Jersey, where I used to carry his drums into high school dances where
he played. I was 17, and I'd got in trouble when this underage girl I
was going out with got pregnant and her parents had me arrested for
statutory rape. So I left home and moved to Manhatten, which was
strictly illegal because it was breaking probation, and that's when I met
Clem again. I fell in love with Debbie Harry the first time I saw her
sing. I had such a crush. These seemed like such glamourous people to
me. Debbie was about ten years older than me, and Chris Stein about five
or six. She'd been in Wind In The Willows and been a Playboy bunny and
they hung out with Warhol people. I was in awe of them.
Anyway, when Fred Smith quit Blondie to join Television, Clem suggested I
might be able to play bass. I looked right. I was wafer-thin, going
through my Ian Hunter lookalike period, and I could barely play, which
was important criteria at that point. He took me to a midtown loft on
37th, near 8th Avenue with all the hookers outside. We jammed on the
Stones' Live With Me for about an hour, smoked grass and just kept
playing. At the end they said, this is fine. I was in. I could sleep
in the rehearsal space and every week I'd report back to my probation
officer in New Jersey and lie about what I was doing.
We did a lot of shows as a four piece, where Chris and Clem and I would
back up Debbie, in little dives, where you'd set up a guitar amp and a
mike on the floor in the bar and play. If we each came out with $5 at the
end of the night that was fine. That meant a cheese sandwich, some
potato chips and breakfast tomorrow, but it was clear that the sound
wasn't strong enough, so we corralled Jimmy Destri from Milk N' Cookies.
Later, I moved in with Chris and Debbie in their tiny one-bedroom flat in
Prince Street, Little Italy, packed with guitars and amplifiers and
clothes. We weren't making any money, though. I had to wear Chris's
hand me down clothes because I had nothing else. Debbie made jewelery at
night. She would solder pewter with lapus lazuli in it and sell it the
next day to some guy who would sell it on to the shops. Chris was
collecting disability money, I never knew what for.
Debbie would make us scrambled eggs and coffee in the morning and then we
would rehearse. Jimmy Destri was an orderly at a hospital in Brooklyn.
He'd work the late shift and then come to rehearsal still in his white
smock, dead tired, then go home and crash.
Gradually we started getting better gigs and moved into a loft space in
the Bowery, which was a whole new trip. There was a lot of dope and coke
around, and Johnny Thunders and Richard Hell were doing heroin. I don't
think Debbie and Chris were into that then. I took heroin once and it
made me sick. In between vomits it was great but, believe me, once was
enough. I smoked angel dust once with Debbie and it was hellish. I kept
seeing her as a skeleton.
What we did do a lot was fight, I remember Chris demolishing a coffee
table. We'd got into an argument and he started pounding on this table,
and kept pounding until it just fell apart. There was always a lot of
that sort of tension.
We hunkered down there for a long time, working Jimmy Destri in on
keyboards. That's when I wrote X-Offender. The tune came to me one
night in Max's Kansas City, and I went back and played it for Debbie and
she came up with the lyrics. She turned it into the story of my problems
with the law. It became our theme song and we would close shows with
it. But after the press picked us up, the record company didn't care who
played bass. Debbie was what they wanted.
We started working with Peter Leeds, who had been Debbie's manager
before. I didn't trust him from the moment I saw him. Nobody asked him
to, but he set up some gigs for us in LA and flew us out. At the Whiskey
he came backstage and said he didn't think we should be doing a song I'd
written called Euphony. I said, hang on, you're not our musical
director. From that moment I'm sure he wanted me out.
A couple of days later he took us to his hotel, the Sunset Marquis, and
says, I want you to sign this contract. It was like a 10-year thing, and
either we signed it or he was going back to New York without us. So I
said, I'm not going to sign anything without a lawyer. I started
screaming and kicking, but Chris and Debbie told me not to be so
adolescent. In the end, signing that contract cost them millions of
dollars, which they admitted in their book.
When the X-Offender single came out, Private Stock put out this infamous
photo of Debbie in a see-through blouse, which was not the character of
the band. She did sexy stuff on stage, but it was tongue-in-cheek,
very camp. That pissed us off, and I don't think she even liked that
picture very much. For the album photo session I remember we all got
very loaded. I was drinking White Russians, one after another, and I'm
absolutely plastered in that photograph. It's amazing that it came out
such a real good cover.
The British tour in 1977, with Television, was fantastic. Being 21, I
couldn't believe I was in London and it was like being the Beatles.
There were problems though. Our sound was not full enough to fill up
these spaces. We hadn't played much to crowds that size. Also, I would
pogo around and either I would have my dark glasses on so I couldn't see
anything or I wouldn't have any glasses on at all, which was just as bad
because I'm short-sighted. One night, in Bristol, suddenly the stage
wasn't there any more and I landed on my back. The bouncers picked me
up, threw me onto the stage and we went into an encore.
Because of the personality clashes, there were fist-fights on stage. In
England it was Jimmy and Chris. Another time Jimmy got annoyed with me
in LA because of all my jumping around. He said it could knock the
tuning off on his synthesizer, but I think he just didn't like me trying to
draw so much attention to myself. So he picked up my Rickenbacker bass
and threw it right across the stage. By the end of that tour, I knew I
wanted to quit, so when we got home, and this was pretty naive of me, I
told them that because of the tension, the fighting and everything, I
though I should leave after the second album.
My girlfriend Lisa, who I'd written (I'm Always Touched By Your)
Presence Dear about, made the decision to move to LA and when I came back
from seeing her off at the airport, I got this call from Leeds saying I
wasn't in the band any more. Ironically enough, it was July 4,
Independence Day. I think Chris and Debbie had decided that they didn't
want anybody in the band who wasn't 100% committed but they couldn't tell
me, so they got Leeds to do it. I think he was more than pleased.
A month later I shipped everything out to LA to be with Lisa, who went on
to work with Coppola quite a bit and appeared in The Cotton Club and When
Harry Met Sally. I hoped to get my band, The Know, recorded, but it
didn't happen.
I didn't see much of Chris and Debbie after that until about 1983. I was
running a book store in LA and they dropped in and Chris looked like an
old Hell's Angel or something. A lot of his teeth were missing. I could
barely recognize him. I heard he'd gotten sick with some new illness
that actually got named after him. That's when Debbie quit her career to
look after him.
The only regret I have is that I didn't do the world tour with them.
Leeds was collecting a percentage of my royalties from Blondie for years
after I left, until I finally refused to pay them. I said if you want
it, sue me. It was stupid. I was paying this guy thousands of dollars,
just because I'd signed a paper I never even wanted to sign in the first
place."
The article includes a large and beautiful picture of the band onstage at
Max's in early 1976, plus a smaller black and white shot from their first
LA visit, with Deborah in the driver' seat of a station wagon.

For a dollar I picked up a "Various Artists" record from 1980 about a month
ago. As I was reading the liner notes I came accross "The Know" with Gary
Valentine on guitar and Lead vocal. The picture of the band didn't really
look like Gary to me and I wasn't sure if it was the Gary we knew, I guess I
have my answer.
They have one song on the album called "I Like Girls" written by Gary. It's
short (2:07) poppy, and offers nothing new or very creative. I don't hate
the song but it's not the greatest either. As one could guess a majority of
the song is the refrain "I Like Girls, I Like Girls."
Anyone else have anything by "The Know" ?

Hi,
Debbie and the JP's were playing at the Jazz Festival in Montreux the 9th Ju=
ly.
Near the end of their concert, Elvis Costello joined the Jazz Passengers on
stage for two songs. Then Debbie came back and sang one with Elvis
Costello.
Then Elvis Costello left. The very last one the played was "The Tide Is
High" which was the only Blondie track they played, but it was great having
that one at the end.

Subject: [DHBIS] Sleeper's ATOMIC
I picked up the soundtrack to the much hyped movie "Trainspotting" last
night. Immediately forwarded to Sleeper's version of "Atomic" and was happy
to hear the band remain extremely faithful to the original Blondie version.
Of course, Louise's voice is not NEARLY as strong as Debbie's, but the song
still sounds great.
My moral dilemna is: how objective am I being in listening to this song? See,
I'm a big Sleeper fan and them covering my all-time favorite band makes me
jump around a lot. So, I realize that my opinion is less objective than many
others' may be on the board.
BUT I fear that some board members will NOT like this song and be even less
objective than myself because (a) it's done by a very current band many
probably have not heard (remember those "now vs. back in the day" posts from
a while back?) and (b) it seems some board members are such die-hard,
Debbie-can-do-no-wrong fans (I'm very close to being one myself) that they
won't give the song 1/2 a chance anyway.
So everyone, don't kill me for saying any of the above. I just wanna see what
the reaction to the song is and if anyone else has these feelings about these
issues. I really want you all to prove me wrong!!!!

In my opinion , If I had to get rid of all my CDs except One , this is the

What I heard was that he sued the band to allow him to participate on the "Hunter"
tour in 1982, and judging from his non-appearance on the "Blondie Live" video, he
wasn't successful. Perhaps he got the settlement in lieu of going on tour.

I've read in several sources that he sued the band because he was being
excluded from practice sessions due to artistic differences. Apparently,
his musical style and ideas clashed with those of other band members, and
they were trying to squeeze him out. I never heard who won the suit, but it
is usually referred to as one of the final events leading to the band's breakup.

What I remember was during 1982 "HUNTER" period when Chris Stein and Debbie
Harry, in particular, did not want Frank Infante to record the album with them.
He did sue to remain as a recording member for the album project but they kept
him off the tour, which was probably just as well since it got cancelled due to
lack of ticket sales before the second leg of the tour, not to mention Chris'
illness becoming evident and having to carry on an oxygen tank on stage with him
in order to make it through the performances. Blondie did have a law suit
against them for cancelling the Japanese portion of the Hunter tour but I'm not
sure what happened with that suit. Furthermore, Frank Infante only wrote 2
Blondie songs. Victor and I Know But I Don't Know. He got sued for ripping off
the idea for the latter song from someone else. I do believe he did not lose
though.
Moreover, Nigel Harrison and Clem Burke joined Chequered Past in 1993 after The
Hunter era and I spoke with Nigel personally. He said as much as he loves
Debbie and Chris, he felt it wasn't right for them to try an oust Frank Infante.
He stated that Clem felt the same way. However, wasn't Debbie and Chris only 2
cogs of that 6 cog machine? So that never totally jived with me.
By the way, has anybody heard what the heck Jimmy Destri is up to these days?
He is the most silent of the crew.

and can remember Frank Infante sued the band for leaving him out of
band decisions - regarding the material that ended up on The Hunter. I
don't think that Frank even played guitar on the album - weren't session
musicians brought in? And how did Blondie end up with that strange
guitarist who can be seen on the video of Blondie Live! I must say, that
video of that concert is the most pathetic thing I've ever seen. No
wonder the band broke up! Debbie is acting so out of it and bored, Chris
looks like a nightmare from a Cronenberg film, and the audience looks
bored out of their minds (come on everyone, stand up and look
enthused!). The worst thing is the plug on the back of the video "one of
the most electric nights ever captured on film!" or something to that
effect - NOT!!!!

split into two factions: Debbie and Chris being the "arty" ones who wanted
to experiment with rap, r & b, disco, reggae, etc. being on one side and the
other side being Clem, Jimmy, Nigel and Frank who were the "rockers of the
band. I'm sure that the "rocker" guys in the band were not too pleased with
the direction Blondie was taking with the Autoamerican album and then the
Hunter album. I mean Clem nearly refused to play on Heart of Glass
according to Debbie - not a disco beat, no! And so what if Infante only
wrote 2 songs for Blondie - Clem didn't write a single Blondie song but that
doesn't mean that he wasn't important to their sound. Frank's guitar was
a big part of the Blondie style. Personally I think that the best
songwriter of the bunch was Jimmy Destri! And the tunes that Gary Valentine
wrote or co-wrote are really great too. Nigel Harrison also has a distinct
style - the songs he co-wrote with Debbie are some of my favorites.

Think I have to disagree with Lisa (slightly) on her opinion
of the Blondie Live video!
I agree that the video doesn't capture the band at its best,
but it does have some great moments, particularly "The Tide
Is High," "Rapture," and (my personal favorite) Debbie
losing her shoe while singing "Danceway." I think the first
half of the video is much better than the second half, but
it does have its moments!
I do think Lisa is right about the audience looking kind of
"dead." But I have to say - at most of the Blondie/DH
concerts I've been to, the audience has always been kind of
mellow (I'm that kind of person myself, not one to jump up
and scream, no matter how much I love the performer). I
don't think it means that we enjoy the performance any less,
just that we show our enthusiasm in different ways!
I get kind of a bittersweet feeling when watching that
video...The Hunter was such a disappointment (commercially),
and it almost seemed like the band couldn't figure out why
things just weren't working. (I remember calling a radio
station back then to request "Island of Lost Souls," and
being told by the DJ, "Boy, was that song a bomb!" Ironic,
since in a lot of ways I think it's *better* than "The Tide
Is High.") At the same time, Debbie was in really good
voice for part of the show, she looked great, and did so
many of the things that Blondie is famous for.
I've always maintained that Blondie's big mistake was
waiting two years between albums. American society being
what it is, you just can't go without a hit that long if you
want people to remember you.
Just my two cents,
Steve

What album is "Danceway" from? Was it a promo or some jobbie like

I have to disagree on that, though. When I saw Debbie in April in
Cincinnati, the crowd was NUTS!!!! It was a medium-sized club and it was
PACKED. I was near the front, and kept getting squished by people who were
trying DESPERATELY to touch her. Several people were crying, everybody was
dancing like mad, and it was insane. So, I'd have to say that not all
Blondie/DH fans are as sedate as the crowd on the live video! :)

I ADORE "Island Of Lost Souls." I like all 3 of what I like to refer to as
"Blondie's Tryptich Of Reggae": "Die Young Stay Pretty," "The Tide Is
High," and "Island Of Lost Souls." Ironically enough, my bf's favourite of
those is "Die Young," my fave is "Island," and the band we're in together
does a re-make of "Tide" in concert, so we've got 'em all covered. :)

Yes, but has anyone noticed that some of the tracks have bad quality? I

The tracks on this album are the single versions, which, in some cases, are
nearly identical to the album versions, except for slight remixing of the
tracks. It was very common to remix singles for the radio, not changing the
music, but making the overall sound much more compressed, so it would sound
good on AM as well as FM radio. One Way Or Another, for instance, does not
have the two Debbies in stereo at the end, but instead has one Debbie in
the middle and one off to the side.

I have the "Blondie Live" video (the one that says it's one of the most
electric evenings ever captured on film), but it doesn't have "Start me up"
on it. Must be that the European version is different of the American one.
I'm very curious to know what the tracks on the American video are.
The European one has: Rapture, Island of lost souls, Danceway, Tide is high,
Heart of glass, hanging on the telephone, Dreaming, One way or another, war
child and Call me. I didn't like the first part at all (almost fell asleep),
but from Hanging on the telephone on the tape gets better and better with an
electrifying One way or another.

The items listed on my earlier posting which are on the schedule on
the web page are the only ones as far as I know, except for the one
date added in Italy. Some attempts were made to add more activities in
England but that didn't materialize.
To the best of my knowledge there is no management outside the U.S.
In fact, there's not even a tour manager for the shows in Europe.
Remember, this is a Jazz Passengers tour, not DH; this is the reason
Debbie's [former?] management doesn't know about it.
I think there's some TV spots being done, but no other shows as far
as I'm aware.

made reference to the fact that Debbie "was JUST ABOUT to reach superstar
status when her career just fizzled out".
Excuse me??? Did I miss something??? Is Debbie not a superstar???? Has she
not always been (post '78 - '79, if not even earlier)????
I'm just wondering if I'm outta touch. I mean I went on this job interview &
one of the questions was: aliens have come to haul you into outer space/you
have 5 mins to pick 5 cds to take with you/what are they & why. One of my
choices was Debravation. The interviewer was like "Um Deborah Harry. The name
sounds familiar. Was she with...... {blank stare as the synapses refused to
connect}". I'm sure I barked the answer at her & no she was not elderly or
anything.
Is she maybe more popular in NYC than other places across the US???

She's famous all over, but for some reason she and Blondie get more airplay
in the bigger cities. I've noticed that when comparing Long Beach, Phoenix,
St. Louis to bigger places like LA, Hollywood, SF, Chicago etc.
That reminds me, I was in Mexico on vacation when "Call Me" was released

people respond to my inquiries about Debbie/Blondie by looking at me as if I

As good a reason as I've seen to quote in the whole message and resend
it to the whole list again, NOT!
Please, everyone, STOP QUOTING THE WHOLE MESSAGE (even if you're replying
with a real comment). If you don't know how to use the editor with your
mailer, you shouldn't be posting to any list.
In the "real news" category - especially to those who replied to me
earlier about helping to enter DH information into our archives:
I have done an enormous amount of database design for the magazine
list. There are 1040 entries in it now, and it's becoming more
complete and more accurate. It's also in a releasable form, which
we will ideally get on the web eventually.
For the moment, I seek the assistance of anyone interested in the
following projects:
1. Use some sort of database program (I use Lotus Approach, although
Microsoft Excel will work), or if that's not possible, create delimited
text files with the full citations of magazine articles. I will send
you copies of material you don't have (which you may duplicate) in
exchange for this service, and I will provide you with details of the
entry format. Entering items from your collection is a ++.
2. Scan the covers of magazines in the list for linking to the
database.
3. Enter/check dates of DH shows from random lists into another
database when I create it.

If this is so, how do they incorporate new verses or words into the
remixed versions of these songs. For instance, in Damien's Supermarket
remix of "One Way Or Another" you can hear Debbie singing "I Get Lost"
over and over in the background. She also says "supermarket sucker".
I have not heard these phrases in any of the other Blondie songs so it
doesn't seem like they could have dubbed them in. Does anybody know
what song they did come from or if Debbie added a few new lyrics?

Er, the original tapes often have more on them than the final album
versions of the songs. Debbie probably sang those words way after the album
version fades out. It's a little trick remixers like to use... :)
For instance, the Denis 88 remix had lots of different vocals on it, which
was confusing, since I don't believe Debbie didn't really have anything to
do with "Once More Into The Bleach" either. The vocals on that are taken
from the "Alternative" version of Denis, an alternate take from the
"Plastic Letters" sessions, which was released on the recent reissue of
"Plastic Letters" in the UK.

Subject: [DHBIS] Blondie remakes
First let me start off with this. I was in a Burmese restaurant about a week
ago and I heard a Burmese version of the Tide is High. The music was the
same, very faithful version. As a matter of fact, I originally thought that
it was Blondie, until my boyfreind pointed out that he can't understand the
lyrics. It was playing softly, but he was right. I asked the waiter and he
confirmed it. Thought that was pretty cool.
Next, yesterday I was record hunting and I found a 12" orange vinyl sampler
for the Trainspotting soundtrack. It only has four songs on it, but it was
$3.00 and it had Sleeper's version of Atomic. Talk about a faithful cover.
To the casual listener, it could very well be Blondie sining the song,
except for the fact that the lead singer of Sleeper (sorry, I don't know her
name off-hand) doesn't hit the high notes that Debbie does (as when she sings
make me tonighhhhhhhttttttt). Other than that, same thing.
I do have a question. Since the Sleeper song is song one, side one of this
promo LP, which I can only assume is going to radio stations, does that mean
that it's going to be a single? I wouldn't mind hearing it on the radio, and
reminding people about Blondie.
Final question, what colors did the Rockbird cover come in? I have a neon
pink, a yellow and a green; what am I missing?

I believe that Sleeper's version of "Atomic" was released in the UK as a
b-side to one of their other singles. That was a while ago since the movie
was released there months ago. Haven't heard of any plans to release it as a
single here. I kinda don't think it will be since Sleeper's 2nd album is just
being released here and that Blondie cover isn't on the album (at least not
on my import). Good idea, though!!

The movie "Trainspotting" is opening in the US this week (as I remember
from the commercial earlier tonight) in LA and NY, other places soon after,
so the soundtrack may get a release here, and if that happens it would be
logical to release a single I would think?
But most likely the four track will be the only thing released, no one will
play it (on the radio), and the movie and soundtrack will sink like a
stone. Too bad cuz I have the soundtrack and it's pretty good. If it does
get released, it would help to request it on your local radio station.
Boy I'm optimistic hmmm? :)

I bought the domestic release of the Trainspotting soundtrack a week ago, and I
must say, the Sleeper cover of Atomic is a disappointment. I thought Sleeper's
first album was pretty nifty pop (heven't heard their second album yet), but
their version of Atomic is simply by-the-book karaoke, and Louise Wener's vocals
can't help but come off as twerpy compared to Debbie's spine-tingling original.

For the most part this disk is the way that the record company first heard
Debravation. More of the way we originally recorded it to be. Except for the
live stuff of course, which was never intended to be on the record. Most of
the vocals were done in Chris' basement as well as most of the guitars
(that's why they sound so bad).
After hearing this, the record company said it sounded like a demo and
shipped Debbie off to England to retrack most of it and made what became
Debravation. I kinda like the raw feel of the record even though it's not
sonically what today's standards call for. Make up your own mind.

Debbie and she does a pretty good job. The music is similar to Elastica and
some songs also remind me of latter day Jesus and Mary Chain. Not as good as
Elastica, better than The Muffs. My opinion.

Alot of this song has to do with stuff said during the sessions at Electric
Lady. Our assistant engineer Shannon was joking around after ordering food
and said this.
The dog bark was Debbie's friend Kerry's dog Ace who happened to be in the
studio that day.
The song opens with "Attention all ye hungry ones!" which is what it said on

I don't really like the chorus on this, it's a bit monotonous. It needs
something catchier to break up the steady pace of the rap, which is *very*
funny. Maybe she'll use a revised version on her next record? I still
haven't heard "Close Your Eyes" either.
I wonder how many more songs she has written that we haven't heard? It's a
bit frustrating to wait and wait for a new record... I REALLY wish she'd

She plays Casandra, and yes, she's a witch.
She was asked if she would like to do a recurring part and she said,
"Sure, you pay me, I'm there."
So maybe there'll be more than a one-shot.

version of "The Date." I doubt we'll ever even perform it at a gig, let
alone record it, but it's a fun "warm up" song to do at rehearsals. When we
do it, our drummer just goes nuts doing an ultra-fast riff over and over,
and our bass player just does the beginning of Queen's "Another One Bites
The Dust" since it fits really well. As for me, I just scream the lyrics as
quickly as possible doing my best to imitate Debbie's adorable Jersey
accent. :)
In concert we have done our own acoustic take on "The Tide Is High," which
got a really good response last time we did it. People were DANCING and
stuff, which was cool.

I have tried to write down the lyrics to this song and there are a lot of
parts I can't figure out. Do you know them all?

The Date
Hear ye hear ye
Come on all you hungry ones.
This is a story (?)
And about the smoozes when they think that they're the only ones
She shot him in the parking lot because he made her stockings run
Her dress got messy cause he covered her with cookie crumbs
Her feet got sticky (?)
Then he broke her bed cause he weighed about a thousand tons
(?)
Then he got my hair in his Hubba Bubba bubble gum
Why'd it have to be him when it could have been just anyone?
Later in the afternoon I had a mighty hunch
That I looked and felt like a piece of his old lunch
(?)
And my face turned green cause by then I felt real queasy
I couldn't go back home I was looking too sleazy.
I should have shot him then, you know, it would have been real easy.
Fish, fish, jump into my dish.
Something in his voice when he said "Yo Miss...".
Fish, fish, jump into my dish.
Something in his voice that I couldn't resist said
Fish, fish, jump into my dish.
About when I met you and you said I was the very best
I should have known that's what you say to all the rest
I told you then that your images were hollow
And your not the type of cat that I would choose to follow
Maybe your perplexed that your banter isn't working
I guess you think my chain only needs a little jerking
So why'd you look suprised just because I blew your brains out?
Love gets messy and that's what it's all about
Pulling up to my house in his Porshe with a telephone
Drooling in the driveway he bit the dog and took his bone
Driving to the movies at ninety miles and hour
"I was in a hurry so I didn't take a shower.
Now I've got a picture that I know you're dying to see
It's "Rambo Meets Godzilla # 73"
During the excitement while I paused to take a nap
I woke up as he tried to put his head into my lap.
And Rambo did Godzilla for the 73rd time
I thought I'd make my final move and get out with my mind
"I think I've got a headache, quite crude is how I feel"
"I made a reservation down at Wang's House Of Eel"
:( Wha.. Oh, God...
OK.
I should have been suspicious when his fingers hit the dishes
When he ate the fortune cookie, he even ate the wishes
No matter where he went he was always on the prowl
If he didn't find a bite to eat he opened up his mouth to howl
He had such an appetite he must have been an alien.
When I saw the chicken bones, it was easy trailing him
When he asked for water well the waiter brought the bucket in
Naturally it crossed my mind how did I get stuck with him?
I said you better take me home cause now it's getting late
I wasn't too suprised at how easy he could mutate
Just like in the movie, his head began to rotate
Suddenly I saw Celilia with her eyeballs on a plate
I knew I had to shoot him I couldn't stand a second date
His lips were coming at me I said better dead then fed
That's when I took my 45 and shot him in the head
Next time you're out hunting be sure to stay on guard
Cause no one's in a hurry for the ultimate reward
The moral of the story's one that shouldn't be ignored
Hell has no fury like a woman who's bored

Half the fun is improvising slightly new lyrics, too. When my band does it,
I absolutely cannot say "suddenly I saw Cecilia with her eyeballs on the
plate" as fast as I need to because it's such a tongue-twister, so I change
it too "suddenly I saw my roommate with her eyballs on the plate," since it
rhymes. :)

Subject: [DHBIS] Offline For A Few Days (No Debbie Content)
I will be offline for a few days as I am moving to a bigger place.
Hopefully this will also open up enough room to search through my vast
Debbie collection for older pictures, articles etc. Well I call it a vast
Debbie collection, it's actually a vast box collection with lots of Debbie
stuff hidden inside them... kinda like Andy Warhol's "Mailboxes". I plan to
have a whole room devoted to the computer, so I can get more organized...
at least that's the plan.
I will answer any mail I recieve when I get connected. Thanks for your support.

conversation when every other thought has to do with DH/Blondie. We tried
watching TV. Lauren Hutton was on. Not the Debbie show, but still I had to
talk about it. We talked about renting a movie. I said, "Why do that? I
happen to have a copy of Forever LuLu with Deborah Harry in my bag." "No?
Have you seen the doll?" "Want to go to Atlanta?" Well at least he
wanted to go to Atlanta...
